Cantilevered Backyard Pergola
We wanted to create a space in our backyard that felt like you were walking out into a tropical, 5 star resort that also gave us more privacy. With this 24’ long, 5’ wide and 10’ tall angled cantilevered pergola the mission was accomplished. All we need now is for the wisteria vine to take off and cover the pergola in the beautiful purple flowers.
The materials we used …
Lumber -
(3) 6x6x10’ treated timber - Posts
(1) 6x6x8’ treated timber - For the 3 diagonal supports
(3) 2x10x10’ treated lumber - For the beams

It’s very important to note that every ground surface is different. This variation my require you to make adjustments to your measurements/materials needed as you see fit.
This wood has not been stained. Do not stain or try to waterproof your pergola for at least a year, as the wood needs time to dry out. We will plant a flowering vine at each of the base post, so the natural wood works perfectly for this.
How To Build It …
Set posts approximately 2’ deep using 2 bags or 160lbs of quickrete per post
Install cross beam on each post using the 6” timber screws
Cut the rafter end details and notches to fit on cross beams. Due to inconcisitancy in the way the post may be set, this is a good time to verify measurements and make whatever adjustments to the rafters necessary on the ground.
Install rafters evenly spaced on cross beams using the 6” timber screws through the top of the rafter.
Ran the landscape 16/2 landscape lighting wire using small staples to attach to the post and rafters.
Install patio lights using at desired spacing.
Link the Meross smart outlet to my home hub and set up automations.
